Updates: December 2017
Updates from Archon Day
Archon Day 2017 was held in May 2017 at Denison University. We discussed the Archon Update Project which resulted in the new code (Archon 3.21-rev3) and talked about where we wanted to go in the future. We established four areas where we could do some more work:1. Migration - Matt Gorzalski contacted folks about ASpace versioning and the migration tool. The response from ArchivesSpace Program Manager, Christine Di Bella:
"Our Tech Lead, Laney McGlohon, is currently working on some plans for hopefully updating both the Archon and Archivists’ Toolkit migration tools to the current version of ArchivesSpace, or at least closer than is currently supported (they currently go up to 1.4.2) ... The migration tools do have a finite lifespan, though. Once most people who are going to make the move to ArchivesSpace have done so, we would
expect not to continue updating them so that we can focus our development activities on areas most needed by current (at that time) users of ArchivesSpace. I don’t have an idea right now of when that time will come. ... Upgrading between versions of ArchivesSpace is generally straightforward. Usually you can upgrade from any version to any other version and skip versions in between. The exception is that there are certain pathways that are required based on certain database migrations associated with particular versions. For example, to upgrade from 1.3 to 2.1, our next version, users would have to upgrade from 1.3 to 1.4.2, then upgrade to any version from 1.5.0 through 2.0.1, then upgrade to 2.1. If someone wanted to upgrade from 1.5.0 to 2.1, though, that could do that directly. We maintain all our old versions on Github, so users can download any version they wish, though only the most current version will, of course, always have to most functionality and be most up-to-date in terms of bug fixes."
2. Research - Rachel Vagts and Jenifer Monger will be looking at how other popular open source software are governed and managed. However, there is currently a Lyrasis project very similar to this underway which may release a final report in August 2018. This will be on the back-burner until we hear more from the Lyrasis report and initiatives.
3. Survey/Census - Matt Gorzalski, Cliff Hight, and Lori Myers-Steele crafted a survey that was answered by 29 current Archon users. The survey results can be found here: http://bit.ly/ usersurveyarchon
4. Communications - Anne Salsich and Sasha Griffin created a website that has updates, news, links, and an ongoing List of Archon Users. You can access the site here: https://sites.google. com/denison.edu/archonupdatepr oject. Eventually, we will need to discuss other web matters, such as the archon website and the forums and the manual/documentation.
Spreading the News
The Archon Update Project was presented at the Society of American Archivists' annual meeting in 2016 by Matt Gorzalski (video) and the LibTech Conference at Macalester College in 2017 by Anne Salsich, Nat Wilson, and Caitlin Nelson. An email went out in June 2017 to many mailing lists which announced Archon 3.21-rev3. The October 2017 issue of the MAC Newsletter mentioned the project along with the website for the Archon Users Collaborative.
Archon Day 2018
Do we want to have an Archon Day 2018? What would we want to accomplish/what are the goals? Who could help with this? Where should it be hosted?
